McIlhargy Tavern

An old brick residence with a charming front porch sits on Highway 4 in the south end of the village of Lucan. This residence was built in 1850 by Patrick McIlhargy and was known then as the McIlhargy Tavern. The tavern was built to capture the business of travelers who needed to pass by a nearby toll booth before they could get to London.

The tavern also housed an office and surgery room for Patrick’s son, Dr. John McIlhargy, and a large ballroom on the second floor. Patrick McIlhargy was also a Justice of the Peace and he held several inquests in the ballroom, including the inquest into the murder of Patrick Farrell by the infamous James Donnelly Sr.

The home still stands and is owned by Leslie Carling-Lindsey who has graciously allowed the Paranormal Knights to investigate her home not once, but twice now! Leslie has had strange experiences in the home, including doors locking and opening by themselves and her son’s cradle rocking on its own when he cried. There has also been a sighting of a female ghost on the staircase that leads to the second floor. This ghost is said to wear a long grey dress and have grey skin hence she has been named the “Grey Lady”.

The Paranormal Knights sensed a lot of paranormal activity in this home. Upon arrival, one of our Psychics saw a couple rocking on the front porch. The couple remained on the porch when we went onto it, the man with a rifle in his hand and a woman rocking a baby. This couple was sensed to be judging those who passed by. There was also a stage coach seen outside the home.

On the side of the home, a man was seen in one of the windows. This man was believed to be unhappy and possibly dying. Leslie later informed the team that a man had become ill and died in that room. In fact, the window had been lowered in the room so that he could more easily receive visitors.

Outside there was also a woman seen in the backyard who was waiting for someone to come and who seemed anguished. It was sensed that this woman might have been waiting for someone who was already dead.

Inside the home in the dining room, it was sensed that a member of the law once resided in the home and he was angry about the Knight’s investigation. It was also sensed that the people involved in the murder of the Donnelly family came to this home after the murder to discuss what happened. There was also the sense that the home may have, at one time, housed a brothel where some of the women were gravely mistreated.

On the staircase, one of our team members saw a woman walking up the stairs. The member followed her and saw her rocking a baby in the room to the right. The lady wore a black dress with a grey apron, her hair pulled back tightly into a bun. Could this be the Grey Lady and was it this same woman who caused Leslie’s cradle to rock when her son cried?

The Paranormal Knights wish to thank Leslie Carling-Lindsey for allowing us to investigate her historical home a second time.
